The Department of Medical Sciences

The Department of Medical Sciences (DMS) was established in 2012 (Rector's Decree n. 2804, 14.05.2012). The guiding principles of the Department of Medical Sciences are to invest in our human and economic resources, to offer the best medical education, to potentiate our infrastructures, to develop and test new medical research methodologies, to foster collaboration with other national and international research centers, and to promote collaboration with other departments and integration with local health care organizations.

The Department of Medical Sciences is mainly located within the "City of Health and Science" University Hospital in Torino, where Department of Medical Sciences professors direct 3 hospital departments and 17 specialist services. The Infectious Diseases Services are located in the "Amedeo of Savoy" Hospital in Torino. The close physical proximity of research scientists and medical professionals working in broad areas of biomedical research fosters interdisciplinarity and promotes group co-operation. The structure of the DMS also helps brings medical education up-to-date with the latest research activities, teaching our doctors to bring innovation from the lab to the clinic, as required for a 21st century view of human diseases and their treatment. Beyond the medical and other degree courses that the Department of Medical Sciences is involved in, we also offer excellent teaching and research resources for post-graduate studies (Specialization Schools, PhD degrees, Master's degrees, Continuing Medical Education etc.).

The Department of Medical Sciencesis a centre of excellence in medical research, with groups that publish in top-level international journals and conduct collaborations with institutions near and far. Our research is carried out in modern laboratories with advanced equipment and highly qualified professional scientists. The DMS performs well according to the indicators of internationalization (as measured by the number of papers with international coauthors, the number of grants obtained from international funding agencies and the international mobility of its personnel).

Although the DMS is just 3 years old, already many indicators demonstrate the dynamic nature and planning capacity of our scientific community, such as the constant increase in the number of research products (academic articles, books, conference attendances, patents awarded etc.), the high ranking of the Department of Medical Sciencesaccording to the Valuation of Research Quality (or VQR), and the amount of funding resources obtained through national and international competitive grants.

The Department of Medical Sciences brings together the lab-to-bedside goals with the most innovative approaches in medical research (basic, clinical and applied) to further our understanding of the mechanisms of disease, and to study the impact of environmental and genetic factors. A priority of the DMS is to perform and promote advanced research in wide-ranging areas of medicine such as: cardiology, clinical biochemistry, dermatology, dietology, endocrinology, epidemiology, gastroenterology, geriatrics, infectious diseases, internal medicine, medical genetics, nephrology, nuclear medicine, pathology, pneumology, rheumatology and sports science & technology.

Research within the department is oriented towards biomedical and clinical studies, including translational steps that connect basic research to clinical work.
