 The Mission

The mission of the Department is articulated in the following specific goals:

  • To combine within a single department research groups from basic, pre-clinical and clinical areas of investigation in order to carry out top-level studies that offer new approaches to our understanding of the pathogenesis and diagnosis of disease, to elucidating the contribution of genetics and the genome to disease, and to make advances in the treatment of acute and chronic diseases, both systemic and organ-specific;
  • To promote and develop networks for collaboration and synergy between groups with different types of expertise in order to:
    • Facilitate transfer of results obtained in basic research to the bedside, with the goal of obtaining innovative diagnostic and therapeutic approaches
    • Develop products and technologies that may be patented or otherwise commercialized
    • Implement and improve the process of writing biomedical research grant applications for funding from national and international institutions, from Agencies and Foundations, and from non-profit organizations;
    • Facilitate access to advanced technologies and equipment, and to facilitate the preparation of drug and diagnostic test protocols of potential interest for industry, including trials of new medicines;
    • Offer a broad range of professional experiences for our staff that will translate into quality teaching for future doctors, biotechnologists, nurses and other health care professionals.
