The Facility

The Seahorse XFe24 Analyzer performs real-time analyses of cell metabolism. Cell metabolism has growing relevance in multiple research fields, such as obesity, diabetes, endocrinology, hepatology, cardiology, oncology, immunology, etc. etc. The study of metabolic changes in response to drugs, nutrients, hormones, chemicals, genetic manipulations, and microenvironment insults can improve our understanding of cell phenotypes and represents a powerful tool for functional interpretation of omics data. In addition, the metabolic profile of circulating cells can be used as diagnostic/prognostic biomarker in clinical research.

  • The Seahorse XFe24 allows real-time cell metabolic analyses:

- Mitochondrial Stress
- ATP Production Rate
- Glycolytic Rate
- Substrate Oxidation Stress (Glucose/Glutamine/Long-chain fatty acid)
- Fatty Acid Oxidation Stress (Palmitate-based)
- Cell Energy Phenotype
- T Cell Activation

  • Analyses can be performed on adherent/non-adherent cells, small organisms (Zebrafish), spheroids, and tissue samples, including pancreatic islets.
  • Samples are analysed in 24-well plates. A dedicated incubator is available for plate pre-incubation.
  • Up to four drugs may be added to the assay cartridge for automated injection during the assay. This allows assessment of metabolic changes in response to drugs, nutrients, hormones, chemicals, substrates, activators/inhibitors of signal pathways, etc. etc. Non-destructive nature of the protocol makes it compatible with other downstream analyses

The Wave Desktop/Controller are the assay design, data analysis, and file management software for the Agilent Seahorse Analyzer. They are available on the internet and compatible with the most common operating systems. The Agilent Seahorse Analytics, the newest data analysis application for Agilent Seahorse Analyzer, is built in the cloud and allow data analysis, storage and sharing.

The Seahorse Platform is accessible through service/collaboration to all scientists of UNITO or other Research Institutions. For further information on how to access and book on the online calendar, please  contact: federica.barutta@unito.it stefania.bellini@unito.it
